The Sugar Industry Authority Training Institute (SIATI) is the educational arm of the Sugar Industry Authority, dedicated to strengthening the skills and knowledge base of individuals working across Jamaica’s sugar industry. Our programs are designed to support both factory operations and agronomy, ensuring a comprehensive approach to building capacity in the industry.

At SIATI, training goes beyond theory. Courses are delivered by a team of past and current industry professionals who bring a wealth of practical expertise, technical insights, and real-world experiences into the classroom and field. This unique blend of academic rigor and industry practice ensures participants are well-prepared to meet the evolving challenges of the sugar industry.

Programs & Courses

The Sugar Industry Authority Training Institute (SIATI) offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip participants with both foundational knowledge and specialized technical skills. Training is delivered in two modules, ensuring students progress from core principles to advanced applications in either Agronomy or Sugar Manufacture & Processing.

Module 1 — Foundation Courses

This module provides participants with the essential knowledge and tools required to understand the Jamaican sugar industry and to build technical competence.

The Jamaica Sugar Industry

Legal, Institutional and Regulatory Framework.

Sugarcane Anatomy

Foundation in the structural biology of the sugarcane plant.

Sugarcane Physiology

How the sugarcane plant functions and develops through its growth stages.

Intro to Crop Protection

Principles of sugarcane pest and disease management.

Intro to Laboratory Techniques

Core laboratory skills for sugar industry contexts.

Intro to Microsoft Applications

Digital literacy essentials for professional work.

Module 2 — Specialization Streams

Upon completing Module 1, students choose one of two specialization streams, depending on their career path and professional interests.

Agronomy Stream

Designed for those focused on sugarcane production and crop management. Courses include:

  • Farm Management
  • Pest Management
  • Sugarcane Pathology
  • Sugarcane Varieties & Nutrition
  • Sugarcane Harvesting
  • Weed Management in Sugarcane

Sugar Manufacture & Processing Stream

Designed for those pursuing technical expertise in factory operations and processing. Courses include:

  • Overview of the Sugar Industry
  • Cane Preparation & Milling
  • Clarification, Evaporation & Crystallization
  • Centrifugation
  • Quality Control & By-products Utilization
  • Industry Trends & Business Practices

Certification

On successful completion of both modules, students are awarded a Certificate in Sugarcane Technology, recognizing their competence in either Agronomy or Sugar Manufacture & Processing.

Registration & Access

All training courses at the Sugar Industry Authority Training Institute (SIATI) are free of charge for stakeholders across the Jamaican sugar industry. This includes farmers, estate workers, factory staff, students, researchers, and policy makers who are engaged in the sustainability and development of the sector.

Classes are delivered online via the Moodle platform, allowing participants to learn flexibly and conveniently from any location.
